Churn Rate vs. Retention Rate

Churn rate vs. retention rate: the short answer

Churn rate is the percentage of customers (or revenue) you lose over a period; retention rate is the percentage you keep. They’re two sides of the same coin — in the simplest terms, retention rate is roughly 100% minus churn rate — but each frames the business differently, and the revenue-based versions tell you far more than the customer-count versions.

How to calculate each

Customer churn rate is customers lost in a period divided by customers at the start. Customer retention rate is customers retained divided by customers at the start. Simple, but incomplete — because not all customers are worth the same.

Why revenue-based versions matter more

Losing one small account and losing your largest both count as “one churned customer,” but they’re nothing alike financially. That’s why revenue churn and net revenue retention (NRR) are the metrics that matter most. NRR captures churn, downgrades, and expansion together, and an NRR above 100% means your existing base is growing even before you add a single new customer.

Using them to act

The numbers are a scoreboard; the value is in what they trigger. Rising churn should route to a root-cause review; strong NRR accounts are expansion conversations. Tracking these alongside account health — ideally in the same system as your CRM — is what turns the metric into retained revenue.

Cloud Coach keeps retention metrics next to the delivery and account data that drives them, on Salesforce.
