Process Builder vs Flows: Navigating Salesforce Automation

Process Builder vs Flow: start with the news

Here’s the most important thing to know before comparing them: Salesforce is retiring Process Builder. Salesforce has stopped letting users create new Process Builder processes and is moving everyone toward Flow, its single go-forward automation tool. So while this comparison still matters (plenty of orgs have existing Process Builder automations to understand and migrate) the decision itself has largely been made. New automation belongs in Flow.

What Process Builder was

Process Builder was Salesforce’s point-and-click automation tool for triggering actions when a record changed, update a field, create a record, send an email, and so on. It made automation accessible to admins who weren’t writing code, and for years it was the default for straightforward, record-triggered logic.

What Flow is

Flow (built in Flow Builder) is Salesforce’s more powerful, more flexible automation tool, and now its primary one. It does everything Process Builder did and much more: it can handle complex, multi-step logic, guide users through screens, run on a schedule, and process records in ways Process Builder couldn’t. It’s a bigger tool with a steeper learning curve, but it’s where Salesforce has put its investment.

What this means for you

If you’re building something new, build it in Flow. If you’re running older Process Builder automations, the task now is understanding them and planning a migration to Flow before Salesforce fully retires them, so nothing breaks when it does. The practical risk isn’t choosing wrong between the two; it’s leaving legacy Process Builder logic in place too long and getting caught by the retirement.

How Cloud Coach fits

Cloud Coach runs natively on Salesforce, so it works alongside your Salesforce automation rather than replacing it. Your Flow-based automations and your Cloud Coach project data live in the same org, which keeps delivery workflows and platform automation working from one source of truth.
